Montessori Philosophy

August 15, 2009 by cwmontessori

The Montessori Methodology was developed over a century ago by Dr. Maria Montessori. The Montessori Methodology emphasised on the Importance of the Foundation of Education during the First Two Years of Life, The Sensitive Periods, the Need for Preparation of the Environment and the Power of the Child.

Children learn unconsciously in their first two years of life. This is the foundation for the future learning. Dr. Montessori calls the process of formation of the sub-conscious mind, the Sensitive Periods. During these periods children can most easily master a particular learning skills or ability within the prepared environment in a Montessori classroom. The Prepared Environment is set up to help the children gain skills like, co-operation, co-ordination, order, concentration, and independence.

We know if the child is to develop, he/she must cultivate from the beginning of his/her life ‘freedom to work’.

The Montessori environment contains five basic curriculum areas: -

 Practical Life
 Sensorial
 Language
 Mathematics
 Cultural

It is included with Art & Craft, Music & Movement, Geography, History, Science and Physical Education.
